The HeartStart HS1 and HeartStart FRx are both semi-automatic external defibrillators built on the same Philips SMART Biphasic waveform technology, and both are designed for use by ordinary bystanders, not just clinicians. Choosing between them usually comes down to where the AED will live.
HeartStart HS1 — built for home and office
The HS1 is aimed at home, office and public-access settings. It uses HeartStart Pads (not cartridges) and is designed to be as simple as possible: switch on, follow the voice prompts, deliver a shock if advised. It's the common choice for gyms, schools, reception areas and family use.
HeartStart FRx — built for tougher environments
The FRx is rated to a higher degree of dust and water resistance and can survive drops from about a metre, which is why you'll see it in factories, warehouses, fire trucks, and outdoor or industrial settings. It uses a sealed pads cartridge (the SMART Pads II Cartridge) that combines the pads and battery check in one component, which simplifies maintenance in harsher environments.
